Virtua Tennis was first released in 1999 and was the most exciting arcade game of its time. Tennis fans loved the game and it was a hit all over the world. The mechanics was easy to learn and the simplicity of mastering the game appealed to everyone. No one found any flaws with the game and that added to its tremendous popularity.
But that was then and this is now. The developers have tried to pick up on the original game's success and released the latest edition called Virtua Tennis 4. Unfortunately, they failed to implement the latest technologies in game mechanics which have changed vastly over the last ten years. The controls are almost identical to the original and the mechanics are the same. Nothing new in terms of technology has been added to the new game. It feels like you're playing an old game of yesteryear.
The excitement of the original is absent. There is no feeling of enjoyment when playing the game. Everything seems too simple and very few options remain available in either mode you choose. You can perform power shots, drop shots and lobe the ball, but all this depends on your position on the court or where the ball is situated. Other than that, you can't perform anything spectacular. The game doesn't inspire you to become the best tennis star or to perform beyond anything standard. You will feel disappointed that the game is so limited in performance. Many tennis fans will rather opt for another game than waste their time playing this one.
The camera can display slow motion and some other cute views are available, but again they fail to inspire, and don't provide much depth into the game. It looks remarkable, but doesn't make the game any more enjoyable. It actually limits you and interferes with your game play. The players don't look realistic and move with a kind of animation that doesn't quite look human. With today's technologies in the gaming industry it's a shame the developers haven't used any of it.
The game has lost its awe and when you play multi player mode it may seem a bit more realistic. Playing the computer as an opponent is much too easy. You can't make many mistakes and most of the time the ball will land in the court. All the current tennis stars are there and you can choose to be any of them. You can create your own player if you want and this option does add some variety to the game.
You need to start out as an amateur and play in different tennis tournaments across four continents. You interact with fans, and attend events and play different challenges all across the globe and earn points as you progress. There is a board that will display your ratings as well as those of your opponents so you always know how you rate amongst the world's greatest stars. To rank well, you must choose your events carefully. Some will provide more points than others, so choose wisely.
You can buy clothing for your character and look impressive on the court. If you have the correct equipment you can do wonders on the court. Some of the other characters around the court will give the feeling that it's more realistic than it really is. These background characters do make the game slightly more interesting, but you need to play it for yourself to see.
